What do you think is the biggest barrier preventing more diverse journalists from entering Canadian newsrooms?

I'm not sure—I haven't really thought about it. Lack of interest from diverse candidates in journalism careers. Systemic gatekeeping through unpaid internships, expensive education, and industry connections. Most newsrooms are already diverse enough.

How familiar are you with successful diversity initiatives currently working in Canadian journalism?

Not familiar—I haven't heard of any specific programs. Vaguely aware that some newsrooms have diversity programs, but not sure what they do. Familiar with mentorship programs, partnerships with journalism schools, and Indigenous journalism initiatives. Very knowledgeable—I can name specific programs and their measurable outcomes.

Which factor do you believe has the most impact on whether diverse journalists stay in Canadian newsrooms?

I haven't considered this issue before. Salary and job security are probably the main factors. Workplace culture, advancement opportunities, and experiencing discrimination or microaggressions. Most diverse journalists leave for better opportunities in other countries.

How aware are you of the differences in diversity progress between urban and regional Canadian newsrooms?

I didn't know there were significant differences. I suspect urban newsrooms are more diverse, but I'm not sure why. I understand urban centres have more resources and larger talent pools, creating disparities. I'm deeply familiar with geographic disparities and their systemic causes across Canada.
