What do you think is the PRIMARY reason many Canadian newsrooms have had to cut staff and reduce coverage in recent years?

I'm not sure—I hadn't thought about it much. Fewer people are reading news online compared to print. Advertising revenue has collapsed as companies moved to Google and Facebook. Advertising revenue collapsed to Google and Facebook, combined with media consolidation and the shift from print to lower-margin digital platforms.

How familiar are you with the current threats to press freedom and editorial independence in Canada?

I haven't really considered this as a problem in Canada. I know there are some legal challenges, but I'm not clear on the details. I'm aware of strategic lawsuits (SLAPPs) and government access restrictions affecting journalists. I understand how SLAPPs, government hostility, and access-to-information complexity are systematically draining newsroom resources and intimidating reporters.

What's your understanding of how social media algorithms affect Canadian journalism?

Social media helps journalists reach more readers—that's mostly positive. I know algorithms matter, but I'm not sure exactly how they impact newsrooms. Algorithm changes can significantly impact newsroom traffic and revenue. Newsrooms are dependent on platforms they don't control; algorithm changes can devastate traffic overnight, forcing journalists to optimize for engagement over truth.

Which of these emerging solutions do you think shows the most promise for sustainable Canadian journalism?

I'm not aware of any real solutions being tried. Paywalls and subscription models seem like the answer. Membership models, nonprofit journalism, and collaborative reporting are showing promise. A combination of membership models, nonprofit structures, collaborative reporting, specialized coverage, and direct audience engagement—plus supportive government policy—offers the best path forward.
